Upon the release of Sam Lambeth's debut solo record, Love & Exile, he decided perhaps it would be sensible to assemble a live band. You know, in case people like his stuff and want to see him at a gig. You never know, after all. It turned out to be the best decision he ever made.
Across the latter period of 2021, Sam Lambeth & The Four Chords brought their unique, engaging, raw, exciting, entertaining and unpredictable live show to sold-out gigs in London, Manchester and Birmingham, to festivals across the UK, to an exclusive in-store at HMV and a special acoustic show in a beautiful cathedral.
With The Four Chords - Sam Hunt (drums / vocals), Zoe Brittle (keyboards / vocals), Cal Pascoe (bass) and Bas (guitars) - behind him, Lambeth has been able to take songs old and new and breathe new life into them - songs that were recorded have now evolved and grown, with added excitement, layers, solos, big riffs, tender harmonies and unpredictable - and fun - segues into old standards.
"Taking songs already recorded to a live band and just letting rip has been so much fun," Lambeth says. "We've not stuck to the formula at all. Songs have been given a fresh lick of paint, new changes, additions and amends. There's a fluidity to the live show that's different and exciting."
Wanting to capture these lightning moments, Lambeth and the band took to their trusty rehearsal space, The Cellar Rooms in Wolverhampton, in early February 2022 and cut pretty much every song that they know.
The result? A time capsule. A tablet. A piece of forever that captures the raw but rehearsed brilliance of one of underground music's most unique talents.
Their covers of 'Untitled (Love Song)' and 'Badge' are scintillating and sensational, buoyed by gorgeous guitar solos and equally enarmouring harmonies.
Versions of 'When Love Ain't Enough', 'When I'm With You', 'All the Best' and 'Nod My Head' have a different, vibrant energy and aura than they do on record, with a freer and looser feel and plenty of sturdy musicianship.
Meanwhile, there are a number of exciting exclusives, no least 'L.A. River', a new track that perfects the group's brand of desert rock and a song that hasn't even been played live yet, let alone featured on a record.
'Dog Days Are-A Comin Again', a song that also only recently saw the light of day at live shows, is another brilliant and thunderous addition.
'The Cellar Rooms Sessions' has the majesty that suckers you in, just like all great live records. And, like all amazing live cuts, it features a faithful cover shot that's similar to The Allman Brothers' classic 'At Filmore East'. A worthy homage.
If you've yet to see Lambeth and the gang, this is your opportunity to sample that talent and craftsmanship. With only 25 copies available, make sure you act fast. Each CD is also signed by the band.
